Poems by Robin Mellor

I Saw a Monkey and a Bear

As I walked out by the light of a star,
by the light of a star walked I,
my duck rolled fast on cotton reel wheels
and a monkey came running by.

A monkey came running by, my friend,
and my duck rolled on cotton reel wheels;
the monkey was pulling a teddy bear
by the hand, over starlit fields.

Hand in hand, over starlit fields, my friend,
the monkey and the bear came past,
and I thought, by the light of a twinkling star,
that my childhood would always last.

That my childhood would always last, my friend,
like the words of a favourite song;
but the monkey fled over the hill with the bear
and, by the light of a star, they were gone,

by the light of a twinkling star, they were gone.
